The innovative shared e-bike system in Limassol has completed one full year of operation as of January 2026, marking a key milestone for sustainable urban mobility in the city. These e-bikes are the first electric bicycles ever introduced in Limassol, offering residents and visitors a modern, active, and environmentally friendly transport option.
Before the implementation of services under the metaCCAZE project, Limassol only provided a shared conventional bike system operated by nextbike Cyprus. Since January 2025, 200 shared e-bikes have been deployed across the city, with 33 e-bikes funded by the metaCCAZE project, supporting Limassol’s transition toward active, efficient, and sustainable urban mobility.
The service was officially launched during an open event in January 2025, attended by the Mayor of Limassol and mayors from other municipalities in the metropolitan area. After one year of operation, significant results have been collected, and Limassol’s local partners are now sharing their experiences and insights from the deployment of the shared e-bike system. E-bikes have quickly become extremely popular, achieving four to five times more rentals than conventional bicycles, compared to the nextbike system in operation for several years. Limassol’s hilly terrain makes e-bikes particularly practical and highly sought after. In addition, the city’s public transportation system remains limited, despite recent economic growth. Furthermore, traffic on the streets of Limassol has become unbearable, which has prompted many of its residents to use the shared e-bikes for their daily commute. Riding an e-bike provides a fast, convenient, and enjoyable way to move around the city and daily commuting even in extreme weather conditions, benefiting both residents and tourists, while supporting Limassol’s growing reputation as a vibrant tourist destination.

To raise awareness of the new shared e-bike service, the local metaCCAZE team organized a series of activities during European Mobility Week, allowing citizens to test the e-bikes and take part in fun group rides. Meanwhile, the nextbike team, responsible for managing the shared e-bikes, took part in events such as the Cyprus Cities Forum, promoting the service and sharing the positive impacts and outcomes of the metaCCAZE project with the wider community.
