As part of Cyprus Forum Cities 2026, a panel discussion coordinated by MaaSLab, together with the Mayor from the Municipality of Limassol as partners of metaCCAZE, explored key challenges and opportunities related to sustainable urban mobility and governance in Cyprus, while addressing these challenges through the four use cases implemented in Limassol under the project.
The discussion focused on the growing need for integrated and coordinated mobility planning, particularly in rapidly developing urban areas where transport demands and sustainability objectives continue to increase. Participants highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between public authorities, local governments, transport stakeholders, and citizens in order to accelerate the transition toward cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive mobility systems.
Special emphasis was placed on the role of innovation and pilot implementation within the metaCCAZE Project. Through ongoing activities in Limassol, the project is testing innovative mobility solutions, including multimodal transport approaches, digital mobility services, and user-centred solutions designed to improve accessibility, reduce dependency on private vehicles, and support climate-neutral urban development.
The panel also underlined that technological innovation alone is not sufficient to achieve long-term mobility transformation. While MaaSLab and the Municipality of Limassol are key partners that have already started transforming the transport environment through innovative initiatives, existing governance structures remain insufficient. Effective governance structures, institutional coordination, public engagement, and sustainable financing mechanisms are equally essential for scaling successful initiatives and ensuring lasting impact.
During the session, participants of the panel concluded with a strong and consistent message: Cyprus does not lack strategies, pilot projects, or technical expertise. Through initiatives such as metaCCAZE and its Limassol use cases, the country is already demonstrating its capacity to innovate and test new mobility solutions. As the metaCCAZE Project continues to advance real-world mobility innovation, discussions like this play a crucial role in bridging the gap between pilot implementation and systemic transformation.
