The metaCCAZE autonomous bus pilot in Gozo recently featured on TVM’s Illum ma’ Steph, where Professor Maria Attard from the University of Malta discussed the ongoing trial and the importance of testing autonomous mobility technologies in different contexts.
One particularly interesting challenge has been the frequent occurrence of double parking and illegally parked vehicles along the route. Unlike human drivers, who might instinctively manoeuvre around an obstruction, the autonomous bus is programmed to prioritise safety. When faced with a vehicle blocking its path, the bus will simply wait for it to move! This means that the safety operator sometimes needs to switch to manual mode to navigate around the obstruction and continue the journey. These encounters highlight an important aspect of real-world testing: introducing autonomous mobility is not just about whether the technology works, but also how it adapts to existing road conditions and local driving behaviours.
As part of the Horizon Europe-funded metaCCAZE project, the autonomous electric minibus is being piloted in San Lawrenz, Gozo, providing valuable insights into the technological, operational and social aspects of autonomous public transport.
The University of Malta is also collecting passenger feedback via a survey to better understand public perceptions, trust, acceptance and experiences of autonomous mobility.
