The City of Limassol has been recognised as the “Green City of Cyprus 2025” following the successful implementation of two sustainable mobility use cases, developed with MaaSLab’s guidance and supported by the metaCCAZE project.
In the national competition’s “Green Cities and Green Communities” in the category 2, “Sustainable Distribution and Transport” category, the proposal “Limassol Goes Green: Innovative Micro-Mobility Solutions for Teenagers and the Community (On-Demand Minibuses and E-Bikes)” achieved an outstanding score of 902/1000, highlighting Limassol’s leadership in urban sustainability through the metaCCAZE project.
The first use case, WeeDRIVE, developed by MaaSLab, the research institute in Limassol, offers safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly on-demand minibuses for teenagers traveling to and from extracurricular activities. Teenagers aged 12 to 18 can move across the city safely and independently, without needing parental accompaniment. The service operates with nine minibuses and leverages AI algorithms for dynamic routing, demand–supply matching, and real-time updates, contributing to reduced car dependency, lower traffic congestion, and decreased emissions.
The second use case, a shared e-bike service operated by Nextbike, offers strategically located charging and parking stations and integrates GPS tracking and smart availability management through a mobile application, delivering sustainable and accessible mobility tailored to the city’s needs. Usage data are monitored to optimize the system and improve the user experience.
MaaSLab successfully organised and led citizen participation events and promotional activities, guiding the City of Limassol in implementing these two innovative mobility solutions and highlighting the city’s commitment to greener urban transport. The Green Flag 2025 will be officially presented to Limassol by the President of the Republic of Cyprus.
These achievements demonstrate the innovative approach of MaaSLab, the scientific partner in Cyprus, and highlight the impact of the metaCCAZE project in advancing sustainable mobility solutions that improve quality of life and promote environmental sustainability.
