How can cities extend electric bus infrastructure without breaking the bank or disrupting service? A new model from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) offers a data-driven answer.
Researchers from NTUA, a metaCCAZE partner, developed an advanced strategic planning model that helps cities strategically expand their electric bus charging networks. The goal? To make sure chargers are installed where they’ll be most cost-effective and efficient, without straining the power grid or transport budgets.
The tool uses real-world data from Limassol, Cyprus, including installation costs, electricity pricing schemes (ToU Tariffs and Peak Demand Charge), and travel routes, to find the best spots for new charging stations. It also balances the needs of transport operators, such as keeping buses on schedule and avoiding long, empty trips just to recharge.
